i guess i could install ubuntu and play the game using residualvm from there. but it looks like little if any progress has been made since then. i found forum posts about it back from 2015, theorizing that the bink video decoders might be out of date (or something, idk). yet residualvm has a bug with stuttering audio on windows. unfortunately, the graphics are corrupted. now i can start a new game from the main menu. my mouse was then frozen, a bug with the game for which i applied a fan-made patch (which i prefer not to do for security reasons). I actually got it to partially work in d3d too-specifically i got past the frozen and corrupted frame i was seeing-by alt-tabbing away and back in to the main menu. i installed from the 4-cd version and patched to v1.2 which supposedly removed something (although i'm not sure what exactly, because i earlier copied the data folder to the c: drive to make it stop asking for a cd and i haven't tried deleting it to see if it still asks).
